But First Some Facts:
Being in the Southern hemisphere, Melbourne enjoys warm summers from December to February and cold winters mid year. Having said that Melbourne is famous for having 4 seasons in one day, so I recommend dressing in layers in winter and always having an umbrella and a cardigan or jacket handy year round.
The local currency is the Australian Dollar (AUD) and tipping is not mandatory although appreciated if you receive great service from wait staff etc.
In Australia the standard voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz.

When arriving in Melbourne from overseas you will arrive at Melbourne Tullamarine International Terminal. Getting to the CBD is easy! You can jump on the Skybus right outside the airport doors for a direct route into the heart of the city, or catch local buses, cabs and Ubers.
So once you have arrived at your hotel, slept of any jetlag and are ready to explore, where do you begin?
Having been to Melbourne many times, I can easily say I still haven’t done it all. There is so much to see and do, so it’s best not to try and cram too much in if you are only staying for a short amount of time.
If you are staying a few days, start with my list below and if you are lucky enough to be staying longer, you may be able to venture further and see things like the 12 Apostles and the Great Ocean Road.
In the meantime, here are my Top 10 Must-See Attractions in Melbourne…
1. Stroll Through Fitzroy Gardens
Number 1 in my 10 must-see attractions in Melbourne is one of Melbourne’s most tranquil spots, Fitzroy Gardens, 26 hectares (64 acres) just a short stroll from the CBD. Set within the gardens are an ornamental lake, a scarred tree, a visitor information centre and café, a conservatory, Cooks’ Cottage (a house where the parents of James Cook lived, brought from England in the 1930s), tree-lined avenues, a model Tudor village, a band pavilion, a rotunda, the “Fairies’ Tree”, fountains and sculptures.
Take a stroll through the gardens and soak in the beautiful landscapes, lush greenery, and colourful blooms. You can also spot some wildlife here, such as possums, ducks, and swans.
2. Explore The Bustling CBD
Number 2 of my 10 must-see attractions in Melbourne After a peaceful escape in the Royal Botanic Gardens, it’s time to immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of Melbourne’s Central Business District. The CBD is the heart of the city and offers an exciting mix of shopping, dining, and entertainment options.
Start your exploration at Federation Square, a vibrant public space that hosts events, exhibitions, and live music performances throughout the year.
From there, wander down Flinders Lane, which is known for its trendy cafes, bars, and street art. Don’t miss the chance to peek inside the iconic Hosier Lane, Melbourne’s most famous street art destination.
As you make your way through the city, keep an eye out for the charming laneways that are scattered throughout the CBD.
These narrow corridors are home to some of Melbourne’s best-hidden gems, including specialty shops, galleries, and cafes.
For a culinary adventure, we recommend heading to Lygon Street, also known as Melbourne’s Little Italy. Here, you’ll find a wide array of Italian restaurants, cafes, and gelato shops that offer some of the best and most authentic Italian cuisine in the city.
From mouth-watering pasta dishes to freshly baked pizzas, the offerings on Lygon Street will surely leave you feeling satisfied. For dessert, make sure to try some of Melbourne’s famous gelato, which is available in a variety of flavours and styles.
For a unique shopping experience, head to the Block Arcade, a stunning heritage-listed arcade that’s filled with boutique shops and cafes. And when you need a break from all the walking, take a ride on the free City Circle Tram, which offers a convenient way to see the CBD’s landmarks without spending a dime.
Whether you’re a shopaholic, a foodie, or a culture enthusiast, the CBD has something for everyone to enjoy.
