THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
Before visiting Japan, it is important to be aware of some cultural customs and etiquette. For example, it is customary to bow as a sign of respect, and it is polite to take off your shoes when entering someone’s home or certain buildings. It is also important to learn some basic Japanese phrases.
Additionally, it is important to be respectful of Japanese culture and traditions, such as not talking loudly on public transportation and not smoking in non-designated areas.
Finally, it is important to be aware of the seasons when planning your trip, as Japan experiences a range of weather conditions throughout the year. Spring and fall are popular times to visit due to the mild weather and beautiful scenery, but summer can be hot and humid, and winter can be cold and snowy.
So, let’s dive in and explore the wonders of Japan together!

GETTING AROUND JAPAN
One of the best ways to get around Japan is to purchase a rail pass.
The Japan Rail Pass offers overseas visitors unlimited travel on the JR Railway, selected buses, and selected ferries. Choose between 7, 14 or 21 days. You can also select Economy or Green (premium) class. Adult & Child passes are available.
If you are planning on making multiple trips within Japan, the JR Pass offers the most affordable way to travel around. For example a return trip from Tokyo to Kyoto will cost you around the same price as a 7 day Rail Pass. For more information on the JR Rail Pass you can visit the official Australian distributor website HERE.
So what are the TOP TEN THINGS TO DO IN JAPAN? Here are my suggestions if you have at least 7 days to explore…
1. SNOW MONKEYS
First on the list of TOP 10 THINGS TO DO IN JAPAN is to visit the Japanese Snow Monkeys, also known as the Macaques. They are a species of monkey that inhabit the Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano, Japan. This has been high on my personal bucket list for years and I can’t wait to get there myself one day!
These monkeys are famous for their unique behaviour of soaking themselves in the hot springs during winter, which has made them a popular tourist attraction.
They are also known for their red faces and shaggy fur that helps them survive the harsh winter climate. The park offers visitors the opportunity to observe the monkeys up close while they play, groom, and relax in the natural hot springs.
Suggested Nagano Tour: 1-Day Snow Monkeys, Zenko-ji Temple & Sake
See two of the top attractions near Nagano on this full-day excursion. Explore the tranquil grounds of Zenko-ji, a lovely religious site known for its historic Buddhist statue. Enjoy a sake tasting and lunch before heading down a beautiful forest trail to the home of the snow monkeys, a group of local macaques known for their willingness to live in the snow and bathe in the local hot spring.
THE TOUR INCLUDES:
- Transportation fee from Nagano to the Snow Monkey Park and between activities/attractions
- Lunch (vegetarian and vegan options available, please try to let us know in advance)
- Sake tasting
Getting There:
Nagano is situated approximately 178km from Tokyo. One of the best ways to get to Nagano is by catching a direct train (and if you are using the JR Rail Pass this would be the easiest option for you). The train ride takes around 90 minutes and costs between $65-100 at the time I write this blog.
If you would prefer hire a car or motorhome and drive from Tokyo the journey is a little longer (235km) due to a less direct route.
There is also a night bus option that departs Bus Terminal Tokyo Yaesu and takes roughly 6hr 25mins and costs between $65-$85.
2. MOUNT FUJI
Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan, standing at 3,776 meters tall (12,388 feet). It definitely deserves to be in our list of TOP 10 THINGS TO DO IN JAPAN!
Mount Fuji is an active volcano located on the island of Honshu, about 112 kilometres southwest of Tokyo and has been revered as as sacred site for centuries.
The base of the volcano is about 78 miles (125 km) in circumference and has a diameter of some 25 to 30 miles (40 to 50 km). At the summit of Mount Fuji the crater spans about 1,600 feet (500 metres) in surface diameter and sinks to a depth of about 820 feet (250 metres).
Around the jagged edges of the crater are eight peaks—Oshaidake, Izudake, Jojudake, Komagatake, Mushimatake, Kengamine, Hukusandake, and Kusushidake.
The mountain is known for its symmetrical cone shape and stunning views from its summit. Mount Fuji is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important symbol of Japan’s cultural heritage.
How To Get There:
Once again one of the easiest ways to get to Mount Fuji (and one of the most scenic) would be to catch the train using your JR PASS. The train journey takes between 2-3 hours from Shinjuku station.
It is possible to drive and if you are in a motorhome/campervan there are also campsites available with views of Mount Fuji.
There are buses but although these are cheap they are often crowded.
